It makes me very happy and relieved to see so many ppl (especially aspec exclusionists) starting to use “ASG” instead of “S*A”. It shows respect and kindness and it makes the discourse a moderately safer place, so thank you all for doing this, it means a lot, especially for my friend @kittens-love-aces. 💜I

But as a fem-nonbinary/intergender person, I sincerely hope that the “S” in asg stands for “same/similar”, since only “same” is not necessarily all that inclusive of folks like myself. ♡

~~~ So, it’s incredibly SAD (not to mention terrifying) to say that this is all pretty much true, EXCEPT: The goal of conversion/aversion therapies is not to turn people asexual because being asexual doesn’t mean that you’ve necessarily stopped experiencing a desire to BE WITH people of the same/similar gender, sometimes even sexually (like myself!). It also doesn’t mean that you do not HAVE sex with those ppl. All it means is that you don’t experience sexual attraction.

IOW: Asexuals aren’t /by definition/ always without libido or romantic attraction (bc many of us experience one or both), and as I said, they may also desire to have sex with the people they have romantic attraction towards. They may even desire casual sex for whatever reason, some are even hypersexual, and ofc, many of us desire sex with people of the same or similar gender. So really, despite what they say above, this IS NOT what rebelbaze is describing, it just isn’t. 

Clearly, asexuality is NOT the goal there. They want 1) make people stop acting on their same or similar gender desires, 2) make them stop HAVING those desires, and if they can, 3) make them then desire & be with ppl of their binary “opposite” gender.

1) This post is not at all just about any supposed “cishets” in the community. Literally OP is saying asexuality is “made up and not real” & so that means we aren’t lgbt+. Which is what the whole “what a lovely day to remember that aces didn’t exist until like 20 years ago and aren’t inherently lgbt+” was about. HOWEVER, life doesn’t rely on labels to exist, that’s just beyond poor logic IMHO.

Its very telling that this is still going on in the discourse. It really shows how little is know about asexuality by even well intentioned folk. Ironically its more reason for the sort of visibility we gain from being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. We’re just getting off the ground when it comes to people even understanding who we are. I’m really thankful to the Stonewall Inn, the Trevor Project, and most LGBT+ organizations for increasing awareness about asexuals. Its whats going to get us more formally removed from the DSM’s list of sexual dysfunctions. Its whats going to help suicidal asexual people. Because if you think asexuality is ‘just not wanting sex’ then of course you’d have no understanding of our clinicalization, forced therapies, and unnecessary medical treatments. Because you lack the most basic understanding of what asexuality even is and how it presents to heteronormative society as a whole. That being a LGBT+ identity.
