Shoutout to the autistics with chronic pain

To autistics who stim to try to ignore their pain

To autistics who are in too much pain to stim but need to anyway

To autistics who can’t tell anymore if their in pain or having sensory issues or something else

To autistics whose sensory issues are made worse by their pain and vice versa in a horrible cycle

To autistics who have meltdowns because of their pain

To autistics who feel weak or broken or anything else negative because of how they deal with their pain

You are so strong. You deal with so much pain with a brain that experiences the world intensely. You are so brave facing each day knowing the pain that is to come. You are incredible. I see you and I see your struggles. I see how hard it is to get out of bed each day. I know what it feels like to want to just give up. But you are so beautiful and you have so much to offer the world. Your existence matters.

I hope you find relief. I hope you find a something that eases your pain. I hope things get better for you.

Aromantic autistics, especially those that fit the “cold” and “reserved” stereotypes, are a treasure. Autism and aromanticism are both so demonized, and when you happen to be both, it can be super upsetting. It can be really hard when society constantly tells you that you’re unnatural, a freak, that you’re difficult. Don’t listen to these words, because they’re not true, not in the slightest. It’s okay to be autistic and aromantic. It’s wonderful.

i never know what to say when people “compliment” me by saying they never would have guessed i was autistic, like, “thanks, it took years of ruthless bullying and immense effort to train myself into emulating allistic speech patterns and body language” isn’t quite appropriate but it is the truth.

These are the cool new stim toys/chewlery i bought and i’m loving them. I especially find the Silicone Leaf Necklace to be perfect for chewing, sucking, and even flicking (shape + texture = perfection) and it also polishes my teeth and massages my gums in the process. I honestly love it lol. And the Fidget Ring is not only the most awesome colours, it’s also better than a cube bc it doesn’t have to sit in my palm, which is very very sensitive. I can basically wear it like a ring, and even spin it to boot! And the last one, the aqua Angel Teething Necklace, is super pretty and a nice texture & shape too. Will be better for going out, but yeah it’s all awesome stuff!!

what low/no empathy means: not being able to relate to other people/put yourself in their shoes

what low/no empathy doesn’t mean: lying to people because you don’t care about their problems, not being able to care about those problems, not being able to form relationships with other people, acting abrasive to people because you can’t care about them or their issues, wanting to be the center of attention

nonbinaries-on-ice

friendly reminder that people with low/no empathy can still be compassionate and/or sympathetic! empathetic =/= “good.” there are plenty of good people with low/no empathy.

I’m at my local library and they’ve made a display for autism awareness month. This is a well meant effort, but…

image

As you can see, they’ve gone with the “autism speaks” motif. This is somewhat distressing for me, especially since I usually come here to de-stress. I’m going to write a letter for the library about why this is offensive to me as an autistic person, but I don’t want them to think it’s just me wigging out about it, so if you all would be so kind I’d appreciate it if you could reblog this post and add your own thoughts on autism speaks and the symbols of their organisation. I’m going to print off as many responses as I can and hand them over to the library along with the letter.

Thanks so much for your time, and I hope you all have a good autism awareness month

Hey, thought I’d give an update for those of you wondering how this shook out. After the library didn’t contact me for a few days I decided to head down there to see what was going on and:

image

they’ve changed the display! I have to say, I wasn’t sure what the expect. I thought if they did anything it would just to be to change the colour and hopefully the puzzle pieces, but they actually changed the books and info that they have on there too, Including:

image

A notice explicitly debunking autism as an illness, and advocating how autism is different for everyone and always requires individual support

image
image

Books written by autistic people

image
image

Books about helping your kids with the challenges they might face, rather than guides for coping with having an autistic child

Even THIS book

image

Which I thought had a very suspect title turned out to have this passage inside:

image

You can even see that they’ve decided to promote the NAS, a society dedicated to helping autistic people live the lives of their choosing.

I’m very happy with the changes that have been made here. And I think it’s a good reminder that just because someone gets something wrong, doesn’t mean that they’re bad people. The important thing is being willing to listen and learn, and the staff at this library have done just that.

This feels to me like a good way to start autistic pride month. And remember, if you want to support people with autism this season - or throughout the rest of the year - be sure that you are speaking with us, not for us or over us.

queerautism

This is so wonderful!! There’s a lot of good info there and I’m sure it’ll help a lot of people learn more about what autism really is.

I think you and the community have really made a positive difference here ❤

6-year-old Caleb Squires was left in tears after a teacher took the microphone a moment before he was going to say gobble gobble.
He was ready, opened his mouth and was about to speak, when the teacher snatched the mic.

Caleb burst into tears and some people in the audience laughed.

Harrison County Superintendent Dr. Mark Manchin tried to defend the teacher having said: “It’s a mistake that was made. There was no malice. This teacher, as all our teachers, truly care about these young boys and girls.

The video went viral and sparked a lot of outrage.

image

This teacher keeping her job would set an awful example. Caleb is just a kid and even though he may sound different - it doesn’t make him any less of a human being! He deserved to talk, sing or whatever into the microphone like every other kid. People who have autism shouldn’t have less privileges or a worse treatment!

lovemarcheetah

smh she knew what she was doing…and people really laughed at that.

that couldnt have been my child that she did that to
