breadbank-deactivated20240125 asked:

Hi, so I have a question. Does the term intersex not mean that there are variations of 2 sexes, and that sex is a spectrum? I made a post recently stating that and a lot of people were telling me otherwise. There were a lot of terfs so I wasn't sure who to trust. Could you explain? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, I genuinely want to understand.

intersex-education answered:

It means that there is a spectrum of various pathways of sexual development, and that people don’t all fit into one of two biological sexes, but rather that there is a spectrum of possible combinations of sex characteristics. So there are more than two sexes, and the term “intersex” describes every sex that isn’t one of the two binary sexes, in other words the ones labelled male or female. A lot of people like to say there can only be two sexes and they’re defined by the lack or presence of a Y chromosome, but that’s nonsense. I have a post in my drafts explaining why which I’ve been hesitant to post since people will think they have the right to argue with it.

Bottom line, don’t trust tеrfs on anything relating to intersex issues (or really anything), radfеm ideology is hopeless at incorporating intersex people since it rests on the notions of a strict binary that continues to harm intersex people to this day.

@sommnia Okay I just saw the post and I can see they went with that “well one-armed people should mean people don’t have two arms by that logic” and that’s not even the same logic…how can I put this. “People have two arms” isn’t the same logic as “there are (or “are not”) only two sexes”, the same logic would be “people are two-armed.” And that would be false because of people who are born one-armed.

A logical analogy to “people have two arms” would perhaps be “people are all one of two sexes” which is also not true. Biological sex as a concept is useless if you’re only going to define it by one characteristic, like chromosomes, gametes, gonads, etc. (that actually play no role in our daily functioning and so they make a horrible system by which to categorize people with regards to daily life). A biological sex is a category based on a combination of congenital sex characteristics, and if this categorization weren’t a fallible social construct then we wouldn’t have to argue this. But it is socially constructed in that everyone has their own opinion of what defines it. So, it’s also false to say that humans fit into two sexes, because, um, I exist?

Like it’s just bullshit logic and that’s kind of what terfs are known for

Because some intersex people believe that they are not LGBT+ based solely on being intersex, that means that no intersex people are LGBT+. Since no singular intersex person speaks for everyone, it makes sense to listen to only the intersex people you already agree with for their opinion on this topic rather than all of them.

Fellow person with "female" hypospadias (sorry for the quotes; I'm trans masc and it feels misgendering to call my body female) and I feel your pain. For me personally, it's really darn stressful having no info on whether/how it'll effect me getting bottom surgery in the future. Will it be a problem? Will it effect what kind I can get? I have no idea, because no one talks about it!!!

You have a very good point there, so sorry for that :(. It’s just SO hard to talk about this within its context without saying “female vs. male” bc that’s the way they’ve ID’ed them and yeah. Maybe I should say vaginal hypospadias? Is that more inclusive and accurate?? I just find it all VERY confusing and I cannot imagine how it must feel for you. And to be honest, I’m not sure I’m cis either :/

And yeah omg that’s true, I cannot imagine there’s much available info about how to accommodate this biological difference. Like, there’s almost NOTHING out there for us in terms of info. That said, feel free to message me privately if you wanna. It might be nice to have someone to talk with that has this same issue, bc I have some symptoms and experiences that I’d just LOVE to chat with you about hahah.

consider: the "female rarity" may be influenced by how little people know about vulval anatomy? like my own mother still thinks you pee out of your vagina. a shitload of people think this, it's an incredibly common and stubborn myth, and I can't help but wonder how much this intentional ignorance interferes with recognizing these things?

Yeah actually, tbh, I got the date of my first tumblr reveal of my condition wrong. I know this isn’t really directly to do with your comment, but the VERY FIRST TIME I ever mentioned my intersex condition on my Tumblr was in a discussion about this exact thing.

On Feb 12 2015 I responded to a post where someone was complaining that men somehow still think (cis) women pee out of their vaginas, and then someone inserted some responses from cis women who were saying they had also believed (cis) women pee from their vaginas. I came in to blow the lid off this misunderstanding, arguing that this jackass had no right to judge these women for “not knowing where they pee from” bc for all we know, these women actually DO pee from their vaginas due to having the exact same urogential sinus condition I have (female hypospadias). And of course, since no one talks about this, we are often left to think that’s how ALL vaginas work.

And then just two months ago I reblogged that old post asking if anyone knew if that was an intersex condition, and I believe that was also the very first time I mentioned on tumblr that I was questioning whether that counts as intersex.

Anywho, back to your point, YES this myth IS an issue and reflects the ignorance around social constructions of biology vs. gender, which is rather ironic given how hard society works to maintain the status quo.

doing any goddamn research on female hypospadias (my intersex condition) is always the most frustrating thing bc it’s always about the male version, often with footnotes about how “rare” the female version is, without any reflection on why that might be (e.g., how hard it is to see the lack of an external urethral opening on a full grown female human, let alone a newborn).

i am so goddamn sick of hearing about how the male version is sooooooo common (the most common of them all, for males anyway) yet the female version is rare, so if you wanna know any important info about the female version (like fertility and even common symptoms and experiences) thennnnnnnnnn…. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

even with intersexism, male privilege exists.

it’s so sickening & disparaging as a female intersex person trying to figure themselves out… fml
