satire is “I’m going to take this concept to an extreme or absurd level in order to demonstrate how bizarre/nonsensical/illogical it is” and not “I said something bigoted but just kidding I didn’t really mean it hahaha”
Dang it I’ve written like 5000 words trying to explain this and I only needed this post to reblog
This is so damn true. Media is a continuous discursive process between media makers and consumers that some consumers aren’t even willing to consider participating in bc of shit like “evil PC culture”. It’s sad really :(
I mean, if I never hear someone say you can’t critique comedy (and especially satire) again it will be too soon. The ppl spouting that garbage demonstrate their severe lack of understanding about what satire actually is:
A very important part of comedy is its ability to hold a mirror up society and say “wtf” and if we don’t participate in that by being critical of our comedy (and media in general) we’re failing ourselves and those who make it to begin with. We’re also failing future generations by allowing horrible discourses to carry on without criticism.
Remember too that no media is made to just be consumed. It’s made to be thought about, discussed, thought about some more, written about, discussed more, and so on and so forth. It’s supposed to move us, make us feel things, think things, and grow as individuals and as communities.
tl;dr - The “purpose” of satire is to make social commentary that is critical of a social problem. It’s supposed to make a critical statement about life!! if it fails this test, it’s definitely just more hateful bullshit. and actually, even if it passes that test it can be more hateful bullshit. This is why I always say:

sometimes i worry that… ppl so strongly associate me with “w e i r d” that even the fairly ordinary things that I do are still read as “B A D” when done by me
this is often how my bullying happened btw. i tried to model my behaviour after other students and no matter how hard i tried, how well i pulled something off, it was always cause for more bullying.
so i struggle with this a lot still, and i honestly think ppl still treat me this way.
how do i make it stop???

Tbh, we dealt with this a lot as a child/teenager as well.
This is going to sound harsh, and it may not be applicable to your situation, but we basically just adopted a “no fucks given” attitude.
If people bullied us, we would bite back (verbally, not literally). And we made it clear that we weren’t people to be fucked with.
The bullying stopped after that because people were too scared of us to bully us (even though we never actually laid hands on or bullied anyone else - save one time, when we tried to punch one of our bullies in the face and accidentally hit his friend instead, which was the incident where the bullying died down).
But yeah… That’s probably not very helpful to you, but that’s how it worked out for us anyway. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you find a better solution.
I have so much respect for people like you that can and do stand up for themselves well in the heat of the moment. That’s a very impressive skill. And sometimes I can too, but that’s very very rare given my health problems and neurotype.
For me, the fibromyalgia and autism tend to make my brain super foggy and often quite slow, but still too logical and formal, and i don’t really understand how neurotypicals are/act/interact, despite years and years of study.
I mean, I’m a critical criminologist, phd level studies, I know social/criminological statistics and theories, and i’ve neverendingly practiced scripts and ways of trying to “fit in”, but i almost always end up screwing it up somehow. Then….
Bullies catch on way too quickly that I’m an “easy target” (read: disabled/different). :’(
